Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV)

Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) scheme is a special intervention in Educationally Backward Blocks for out of school girls in the age group of 10+ to 14 at the upper Primary level. ( EBBs – Block having Rural Female Literacy rate < 46.13 – National Average)  

 

  • 61 KGBV schools are functioning in 45 EBBs in 14 districts of Tamilnadu.  Out of 61 schools, 31 are of Type I (100 girls) & 30 are of Type II (50 girls).

  • Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) working in the field of girls’ education and girls’ empowerment are being involved in running the KGBV Schools. 

 

  • Never enrolled/dropped out girls in the age group of 10 + to 14 years are enrolled in KGBV schools.   Awareness campaign, Survey and Door to door interaction with parents are conducted to enroll them 

 

  • 5 full time subject teachers, one for each subject and part time teachers for computer education, vocational education and physical education   are appointed through Non Governmental Organisations. 

 

  • Supporting staff members like Accountant, cook, Asst cook, Office assistant & watchman to run the hostel are also appointed by Non Governmental Organisations. For Type I schools one assistant cook will be extra.  All the teachers and staffs are ladies except watchman.  

 

  • Benefits given by state government such as 4 sets of Uniforms, Textbooks, Notebooks, School bags, Geometry box, Atlas, Foot wear which are given to regular school children are also given to KGBV students. 

 

  • A stipend amount of Rs.100/- per child per month is deposited in the post office.  

  • Insurance coverage has been made for the girls at a premium rate of Rs.45/-per child per annum during their stay in residential school.  

  • Regular medical checkup is being conducted & recorded. 

 

  • SBL methodology is being followed for the girls at the primary level.  

 

  • For girls at 6, 7 & 8 level Active Learning Methodology is being followed. 

 

 

  • Vocational training like tailoring, embroidery, making handicrafts are given. Scout and guide, First Aid, Life skill, Gender sensitization training, Vermicompost, Spiral binding and lamination, online ticket booking training are also given to girls.  

  • Computer Education is also given. 

  • Training in sports, Yoga and Karate are given. 

  • Counselling programme for KGBV girls is being done through mobile counselling van provided by State Government.  

  • All the SSA trainings given to Government school teachers are also given to KGBV Teachers.  

  • All the important functions at the state & national level have been celebrated.  

  • Girls enrolled in KGBV Schools is 4506. 

  • After completing VIII std, the girls will be mainstreamed in High/Higher Secondary schools.  Hostel facility will be arranged through State Government welfare hostels and RMSA girls hostels.
